The Daily Review Routine, Step by Step

An ordered procedure: write one fact per card, review the first box daily, advance correct cards, return wrong cards to the first box, add new cards in small batches — and watch for overloading the first box.

Step 1: write one fact per card. A card holding two facts cannot be graded as right or wrong, and the advance-or-return rule stops working the moment grading becomes ambiguous. If a card has two facts, split it.

Step 2: review the first box daily. The first box is reviewed most often, and it is where wrongly answered cards return, so a skipped day delays exactly the material you find hardest. Treat this step as non-negotiable.

Step 3: advance correct cards to the next, less frequent box. This is the only path out of the first box on a right answer, and it is what makes the intervals increase over time.

Step 4: return wrong cards to the first box. Cards that are answered wrongly return to the most frequent review box, so difficult material is seen more often until you get it right.

Step 5: add new cards in small batches. The typical failure is overloading the first box: add new cards faster than you can review them and the daily session grows until you abandon the routine. Keep the batch small and constant.

Run the five steps in order every session. The order matters: writing comes before reviewing, reviewing before advancing or returning, and adding new cards last so that the first box is already cleared.

  • Write one fact per card.
  • Review the first box daily.
  • Advance correct cards to the next box.
  • Return wrong cards to the first box.
  • Add new cards in small batches — overloading the first box is the typical failure.
